Gladstone Hospital’s Family, Women and Children areas have been transformed thanks to Healing Ceilings, provided by CQShines Hospital Foundation.

Six special Indigenous artwork tiles now brighten the ceiling in the unit’s entry and nursery, adding colour and beauty to an otherwise blank canvas.

Gladstone woman Misty Bell has been one of the first mums to admire the new artwork while she cuddles her gorgeous new bub Rip in the nursery, where he has been receiving some extra attention following his early arrival at 35 weeks.

“Everyone here has been fantastic,” Misty said. “The nurses and midwives have been so supportive and encouraging and the ceiling tiles are a beautiful addition to this space.”

Gladstone Hospital’s Healing Ceilings design was chosen in consultation with local First Nations Aunties and created by artist Laurie Anno.

It represents Family, Yarning Circles and Gathering and supports cultural safety in the Family, Women and Children unit.

The medical-grade acoustic tiles also offer antimicrobial properties and sound absorption, contributing to overall wellness.

Gladstone Hospital has welcomed 411 babies up to 30 September this year and is looking forward to unveiling a new location for women and children’s services later this year.

Maternity Unit Manager Sharon Graham said the new centre at the West Wing would feature modern single rooms for comfort and privacy.

“This upgrade will allow women in labour to stay in their rooms longer, while having the birth suites and operating theatres in the same location will enable better clinical flow.

“And I’m pleased to say the new Healing Ceilings tiles are transportable and will be moving to their new home in the West Wing when the upgrades are complete.”
