Rockhampton Hospital Intensive Care Advanced Trainee Dr Raqeeb Rasul is the 2022 Gill Bishop medal winner for top performer in the College of Intensive Care Medicine exam.

The medal is awarded to the candidate with the highest mark gained over all components of the Part One exam, with one medal given out over both sittings of the exam, which is held twice a year.

With about 200 candidates across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong, this is a phenomenal achievement.

Dr Rasul thanked the Rockhampton Intensive Care and Anaesthetic Department teams for their support and great teaching, which was wonderful preparation for the gruelling exam.

He said it was helpful to be able to prepare in his hometown with the support of his family while he was working and studying.

Intensive Care Director Associate Professor David Austin is immediate past Chair of the examination, and in his 25 years of teaching the Part One exam, this is the first Intensive Care medal winner he has trained.

“It’s an amazing achievement,” Assoc Prof Austin said. “Raqeeb worked incredibly hard and is extremely diligent. I am so proud of him.”
