After many different jobs, Rob has found his calling as a Clinical Nurse with the Central Queensland Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Service.

He loves working with diverse populations in innovative and holistic ways, developing and practising a broad range of clinical skills specific to mental health and substance use such as harm reduction, brief intervention, and psychotherapy.

He enjoys flexible work practices and the opportunity to work alongside skilled and passionate colleagues as part of a diverse multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, clinical nurses, nurse practitioners and psychologists.

Rob says he’s been offered multiple training opportunities, with new skills brought back to the workforce to use with clients, including motivational interviewing, crisis intervention and other psychotherapy techniques.

“We assist with strategies for daily living as well as dependence treatment. We can talk about their difficulties in life and come up with plans and strategies to get them to where they want to be, in terms of their health and wellbeing.”

“It is very rewarding and a privilege to be able to go through that journey with clients and support them through their highs and their lows, being someone that they trust enough to come too for support.”

“With our clients, we understand you can’t just wave your magic wand and suddenly, they have no dependencies. Some of our clients are with us over many years so we understand those ebbs and flows that come with dependency. Relapse will always be part of the process and it’s nice to be able to support clients through that.

“The amount of satisfaction I get is not like anything I’ve ever felt. I’ve worked many jobs in my life, and AODS is it for me.”

Outside of work Rob loves cross country and downhill mountain biking and enjoys the many kilometres of tracks available to explore. He also enjoys taking family trips to Yeppoon and Byfield where there are beautiful areas for young children to play including the Main Beach, Lagoon and Stoney Creek.
