Rockhampton’s expanded Mental Health Inpatient Unit is a huge step closer, with the successful awarding of the construction tender to Broad Construction Pty Ltd.

A $92 million project, this expansion will enhance mental health care by increasing services closer to home for Central Queensland residents.

A standalone new Mental Health Inpatient Unit will be built on the Quarry Street side of Rockhampton Hospital campus, adjacent to the existing Mental Health unit.

The new unit will provide 32 beds, an increase of nine beds from the existing 23-bed unit. It will feature modern patient rooms, collaborative therapy areas, enhanced security, and advanced technology to support clinical services.

Design elements prioritise natural light, green landscaped views, and access to secure outdoor spaces to boost therapeutic care while ensuring patient privacy and dignity.

There will also be on-campus street-level carparking for ease of access.

Early works are expected to commence in September 2024 with site investigations to progress design development with a completion of the new Mental Health Unit scheduled in early 2026, weather and building conditions pending.

Chief Executive Lisa Blackler was excited the tender had been awarded for construction of this significant investment into the future of mental health services.

“Our dedicated mental health clinicians and support staff provide a wonderful service to the Central Queensland community, and this modern space will enhance the experience of our consumers and their care,” she said.
