We’re replacing the existing Blackwater health care facility with a new modular design. The new design and other upgrades will improve clinical flow.
The proposed works include:
- Build a new modular facility
- Upgrade our information and communications technology
- Network redundancy for critical infrastructure services
The new modern, purpose-built multipurpose health service at Blackwater is well on track for completion this year.
The facility will include a:
- 24/7 emergency department (ED)
- with six treatment spaces (four more than the current hospital)
- a triage room
- an inpatient ward
- six residential aged care beds
- medical imaging services
- outpatient services
- dental services, and
- additional consultation rooms.
The new Multipurpose Health Service is part of the Queensland Government’s more than $1 billion Building Rural and Remote Health Program.

Community updates
Community information sessions were held in August 2023 to provide updates, timelines, and overview on the project. Community and staff chose the colour scheme for the build, nominating blue tones.
We intend to incorporate a range of local artwork, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artwork, in the facility. We have started consultation for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artwork. We will include homely touches and finishes to the inside of the build.
Old Blackwater facility
Old Blackwater Multipurpose Health Service has served its community well for close to 50 years.
The facility will be taken apart and removed late this year.
For many, the old facility is an outdated building in need of demolition. For others it’s a place which hosted five decades of memories.
